Industrial Coating Initiative: Cohort 1

Who Did We Work With?

The team at PSI Global Training worked in partnership with Denholm Industrial Services.

The Project

The Industrial Coating Initiative was created to address the skills shortage in the industrial coatings industry by bringing in new talent. Cohort 1 launched the programme, demonstrating its ability to connect newly trained candidates with employment opportunities.

The training for this programme started on 18 March 2024, with employment starting on 29 April 2024.

What We Did

The participants involved, five in total, took part in one of our training courses at our dedicated training facility in Liverpool. These were put on by our instructor, Jonathan Hewitt. The qualifications and training programmes they completed were as follows:

Train the Painter Protective Coating Applicator (Trainee)

IPAF (3a and 3b)

Manual Handling

Abrasive Wheels

City & Guilds Confined Spaces: Medium Risk

Level 3 First Aid at Work

The Results

PSI Global Training had six participants involved in the training programme, with five individuals successfully completing the programme. Following this, all five who completed the training were interviewed by our client and secured employment in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. As of January 2025, three out of five of the trainees remain employed with the same employer.

Cohort 1 highlights the success of the Industrial Coating Initiative in equipping trainees with the essential skills and qualifications needed to enter the industrial coatings sector. It also reinforces the value of collaborating with forward-thinking employers who are committed to driving positive change in the industry.

While comprehensive training is vital, long-term success depends on employers willing to invest their time and resources in supporting and developing new talent.

A crucial factor in this project’s success was selecting candidates who were genuinely committed to starting a new career. Their dedication and engagement remained strong throughout the rigorous process—from applying and attending an open day to interviews, training, security clearances, and ultimately starting on-site in Barrow and maintaining their employment.
